Wilderness Systems Pungo 100 vs Sun Dolphin Aruba 10

by frank on April 25, 2014

If you are currently shopping around for a new recreational kayak then you may have taken to Google searching for information and reviews to learn more about the best models available to fit your needs. Many different recreational models do exist and there’s quite a bit of information to read over about each specific model.

If you are new to kayaking and buying for the first time all this information can leave you confused about whether or not the model you want is a piece of junk are worth the money. Just when you think you found something decent to buy you read another review calling it a piece of junk.

For instance, we I recently came across a website with a review titled:

Wilderness Systems Pungo 100 vs Sun Dolphin Aruba 10

After reading the review, I felt it was more than a little unfair. It gave the Pungo 100 a 4.7 – star rating while giving the Aruba a 1.9 star rating. This is both unfair and deceiving. How does this make a person feel who was just about to buy this Sun Dolphin model?

Why did I think this was unfair?

Look at the image its from Amazon, how many stars do current owners of the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 give it???

Aruba 10 rating

Considering the opinions of 26 different buyers in the image above this recreational kayak’s rating averages out to about 4.5 stars. A lot better than the 1.9 rating found at that generic kayak review website. Furthermore, what also needs to be considered:

  • The Pungo 100 is a $700 kayak.
  • The Aruba 10 can be bought for under $400, closer to $300. There’s just about a $400 price difference between these two models.

Consider the Price Difference

We don’t get use wrong we are not trying to say the Pungo 100 is a bad kayak and ultimately don’t disagree with this website rating the Pungo 100 better. However, we do think the comparison is somewhat ridiculous.

  • The Pungo 100 is a $700 kayak.
  • The Aruba 10 can be bought for under $400, closer to $300. There’s just about a $400 price difference between these two models.

I would hope the recreational kayak costing hundreds of dollars more would win the comparison.

We wrote this to assure those individuals who might be interested in buying the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 that it is not a piece of junk. But we are also not saying it is a top of the line kayak. It’s a good beginners kayak, good for those who only want something simple and inexpensive to occasionally take out on their lake and do some light paddling and relax in the sun on a nice day.
