Tracking Down the Channel River: A Short Review
Last Fall (2013) my son and I, along with a couple buddies and their sons took few days to canoe and camp along the Current River in Missouri which is situated near the Ozark Mountains. We floated through caves, fished and enjoyed the unique Fall scenery surrounded by the dense hardwood forest all with the Ozark Mountains in the background. Our vehicle of choice was the Old Town Saranac 146 Canoe. We rented four of these canoes. Two green and the other two red.
If you find yourself trying to plan a canoeing expedition in the Fall, we highly recommend checking out the Channel River in Missouri. And if you ever need a new canoe, one that’s built to serve as both a recreational and fishing canoe the Old Town Saranac 146 is also worth checking. Below we will review the features of this model.

Review of the Features
If you would rather watch and listen to a review video rather than read our boring words… This is the best one we could find on this model.
Why is the 146 in the name?
This is because the canoe is 14 feet 6 inches long. If you are currently trying to compare specifications of different canoes before you decide which to purchase you may also find it useful to know, its 36 inches wide, weighs 79 pounds and carries between 700 – 750 pounds.
What about the Hull:
The Bottom is flat - This makes the canoe very stable and comfortable in calmer waters. However, there is some give and take. This same flat bottom makes its it a little less stable in rough waters.
Flat Sides – Two extremes exist when it comes to the build of canoes sides, flared (for stability) and tumblehome (efficient paddling). Flat sides have characteristics located in the middle of these two extremes and are perfect for recreational models.
Rocker - Without going into explicit detail to define what a rocker is the more important thing to know is the Saranac 146 Canoe has a moderate rocker which makes it easy to turn and also track straight.
There’s a lot of other features on this kayak. If you like to fish you will fine two rod holds, one molded on the side of the center bench and the other mold in the bow area.
What about the seating? There’s two contoured seat one up front and the other in the rear and between these two seats is a bench for a third person.
The Old Town Canoe and Kayak company has been in business for over 100 years!
If you are looking for the perfect canoe to use for both recreation and fishing then the Old Town Saranac 146 is definitely right up your alley. It’s comfortable and versatile makes a great choice for camping excursions along a river.
