Old Town Predator MX Kayak Review
Compared to the average sized person, big men always have a few more extra questions and concerns when looking to buy a sit-on-top fishing kayak. How much weight will it hold? Will I sink it? How many inches wide? Will it tip easy? These are definitely true concerns and questions which need to be answered before buying.
If your main concern is load capacity. There are many fine kayaks to choose from on the market which will hold a lot of weight (400, 500 and even 600+ pounds) while also providing plenty of leg room to keep a guy with long legs comfortable. Here we will review the details of one that fits these needs, the Old Town Predator MX Sit-on-Top Fishing Kayak. See image below, it’s 12 feet long and can hold up to 400 pounds.
This fishing kayak is part of the Old Town Predator Series of kayaks which also includes the Predator 13 and Predator XL Minn Kota models. These two other models are a bit more expensive but worth checking out as well. If you are new to the sport, wondering about the overall quality the company “Old Town” puts into its manufacturing? This is the oldest kayak and canoe company in America and their products are highly respected.
If you would rather watch and learn what you get here’s a guy reviewing the MX model in a video. It looks absolutely beautiful sitting up there and he hits upon a lot of cool features. The yellow version is show in the video. The kayak also comes in a brown camo (image above), tan and a urban camo (looks silver and black).
If you took the time to watch the video then you what did you think about? Leave a comment below if you spotted any inaccuracies or concerns on how the model was reviewed. In our opinion the video does an excellent job at showing how the Old Town MX was specifically designed with anglers in mind. We love the new deck drainage system provided in the build.
Didn’t watch the video need a simple answer
How much does it weight? We haven’t put it on a scale but the manufacture says it weighs 82 pounds. A little heavy, most deluxe fishing kayaks are.
How many feet long is it? 12 feet. Ample space for people with longer legs.
What about stand-up fishing? Yes, the kayak is stable enough and designed for people who would like a stand-up fishing kayak. And is designed with a slip resistant deck for this purpose.
How much weight will it hold? 400 pounds. There are kayaks that hold more but 400 pounds is still a good load. Do the math on your weight and the amount of equipment you plan to carry.
The hull design allows it to handle a variety of water environments. If you didn’t know MX stands for Mixed Water. While we don’t recommend buying this to use in raging white waters this kayak is capable of handling faster moving rivers. The flexible hull design and its load capacity of 400 pounds allows it to double as a lake fishing and a river camping expedition kayak.
Does it come with a paddle? Yes, and more see the picture at the top of the page.
Does it come with a seat? Yes, the Element Seating System.
Water proof storage? Not only is there a large amount bungee storage on the deck for your gear. The Predator MX Kayak also has large capacity water proof storage. You can drop a battery for a trolling motor in it, or cooler for refreshments.
Customization? Yes, this is a great additional feature of Predator. On its frame are six removable but strategically-placed high-strength mounts. If you want to add a fish finder, if you want to add a GPS, no problem. Maybe, you want to add a Go-Pro Camera, more rod holders? No problem, these mounts make it very easy to customize.
Conclusion – Is it a Good buy?
We have absolutely nothing bad to say about the Predator MX fishing kayak. But we are also not saying it’s the perfect kayak. Some people like Ford trucks, others like Chevy’s. The Old Town Predator MX Kayak is worth mentioning as a choice!
