Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 ft – A beginner’s kayak?

If you are looking for information on whether or not the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 is a good choice for beginners there are a few question you need to answer.

Water environment – where do you plan to use it? This is probably the most important question.

  • Calm flat waters (lakes, slow moving rivers).
  • Whitewaters, fast moving rivers or rapids.
  • Sea or Ocean.

If the top choice (Calm flat waters) matches your water type needs this is also what the Aruba 10 recreational kayak is made for. We don’t recommend this model in whitewater or the ocean.

What type of kayak do you want - Notice the word recreational, the Aruba 10 is a recreational kayak. Recreational kayaks are made for causal paddling on lakes or slow moving rivers. Representing the most common type of kayak bought.

However, if you want to do more than a little casual paddling on the lake? Are you into fishing? Kayak fishing is a fun and growing sport, it allows you to explore new waters which just can’t be reached by foot or in a traditional boat. See our list of fishing kayaks for beginners.

Size - Is 10 feet long enough for you? Will there be enough room to stretch your legs? If you’re under 6-feet tall this should fit you fine, if you are a taller person you should consider buying a 12-foot kayak.

Price – Not sure how much you wanted to spend, the Aruba 10 costs right around $400 and includes free shipping (At least at Amazon). This is an entry level model, you will not find many hardshell kayaks much lower in price.

We don’t recommend beginners spending a heap of money on their first kayak. We don’t think this is a good idea. The reason why, many kayaks are bought but then seldom used.

If after you have been out on the water and know kayaking is something you really enjoy and will continue to take part in then you may want to think about upgrading to a nicer more expensive model.  People are always looking to buy a used kayaks. And if kept in good condition they do hold their value well.

When and if you decide to upgrade to a more expensive model, put you beginner’s kayak up for sale on Craig’s List you will get interested buyer’s.

The Bottom Line

If you are a beginner, who is 6 ft tall or under and looking for an inexpensive recreational model for casual paddling on lakes or slow moving rivers the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 is an appropriate choice.
